Subsurface Utility Engineering

In 2016 J.D. Barnes Limited acquired Onsite Locates Inc. to provide a more complete range of land information services to our engineering, utility and development clients—all from one trusted professional consultant.

What is Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE)?

Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) is a specialized engineering process that involves locating, identifying, and mapping underground utilities to support infrastructure projects. By using a combination of non-destructive techniques such as ground-penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic induction, and vacuum excavation, SUE helps reduce risks associated with unknown underground utilities.

SUE is classified into four quality levels:

  • Level D– Information gathered from existing utility records.
  • Level C– Surveying visible utility features to correlate with records.
  • Level B– Utility detection using geophysical methods to identify subsurface locations.
  • Level A– Precise verification through test pits, providing exact depth and position.

By integrating SUE early in project planning, engineers and developers can minimize delays, improve safety, and optimize design decisions, ensuring efficient and cost-effective construction.
